You keep saying you're going to be here and then you rarely show.  C'mon, chuck.  You can't be that busy.  It's just another election.

That said, here's my question.  1) What line of attack do you think the McCain campaign will focus on in these last two weeks, and 2) do you think whatever he does (ignoring the possibility of a huge non-political catastrophe) he can overcome Obama's apparent lead?

I'll hang up now and listen to your answer on the air.

I did not read the full article, but Chuck Todd has stated that Obama is closing the gap and winning some of the swing states because of organization and people on the ground.  He has said at least once that this more than the economy has helped Obama in several states, especially close primary states.

we voted today for the next president of the u.s. of flippin' a! shhhh!

we are living in david dukeland and have noticed a total lack of support for john mccain. in 2004 metry was full of bush/cheney signs and stickers. it is very eerie the way the neighbors don't chuckle at the obama sign gracing our opulent front yard anymore, and also very noticeable is the lack of support for the incumbent party...

i am taking down the obama sign tonite.

Hey Chuck - Why won't anyone explain that the $250K taxable income Joe the plumber plans to earn is not very realistic?  Doesn't anyone out there understand that payroll and even health benefits come out before taxes?  Including Joe the Plumber's salary he will pay himself?  If he ends up with $250K each year, after all expenses, he will be extremely rich from my point of view.  When you own your own business you can expense almost everything you spend money on.  He will pretty much have $250K spending money if he has $250K in taxable income.  No one I know has that much money and I have some pretty high-paid friends.

Also, the most rational objection to an Obama presidency I have heard from my right-wing friends and family is that they are afraid of socialism and/or communism.  Can you guys do a special report on why that isn't very likely in the United States of America?  They make it sound like Obama is laying the foundation for our country to be the new China or Canada or even Cuba.  Can you talk them down?

To add to that, isn't it true Obama's tax proposal would be very similar if not the same as President Clinton's?

If true why doesn't anyone point it out and didn't the economy prosper under Clinton?

Lastly, why doesn't anyone realize that taxes are a necessary evil to pay down the deficit and not borrow any more money in order to keep Government functioning?

Thank you, GO. I'm a mortgage broker in California, and I've seen a lot of tax returns of "small business" owners. There's very little that they can't write off, and so clearing $250,000 after taxes is a lot of money.

Not to mention that when Clinton took office the economy was not in great shape.  Nothing like now.  But Clinton did prove that you can raise taxes on the wealthy in poor economic conditions and have positive effects.

It is clearly stated on Obama's website:

"Under the Obama Plan, No One Will Pay Higher Tax Rates Than They Paid in The 1990s."

Along these same lines, we've had a progressive tax system since, what, 1910ish.  Isn't it misleading, if not outright false, of the McCain/Palin campaign to call the rollback to pre-2000 rates for the single highest tax bracket socialism?

With earned income credit, we've been cutting checked above and beyond on folks have paid in income tax for years.  If Obama's tax credit makes us socialist, then wouldn't it be safe to say we've been socialist for all these years?

$250,000 is alot of money.  It appears to me that the entire "small business" v. "large business" argument is dependent upon whomever is applying the definition of "small", "rich", "poor", etc.

Also, the media has not made it clear that in his tax plan the amount over $250,000 is taxed at a higher rate, not the whole amount. If I made $270,000 a year then only $20,000 would be taxed at a higher rate of 39 percent, not the entire $270,000. This is NOT socialism.

Bill Clinton promised tax cuts but didn't deliver... that's why 2 years after he was elected Republicans took over Congress for the first time in 50 years!  And that's why the economy got better and taxes were cut under Clinton... I predict that IF Obama gets elected - after governing for 2 years with Pelosi and Reid - there will be a HUGE Republican sweep in 2010!

Also - raising taxes on anyone - hurts the economy - jobs get cut, people spend less, etc.  When you CUT taxes for everyone (like Reagan and JFK did) - tax revenues actually INCREASE!  McCain has the right idea - everyone benefits when all taxes get cut!

FACT:  "Reagonomics" created 20,000,00 new jobs.

Cutting taxes = create more jobs = more tax revenues (from all those new jobs!).

If you recall - after the Republican landslide in 1994 - Clinton cut taxes = budget surplus.  Cutting taxes WORKS!

you can't cut your way out of debit. and no Clinton did not cut taxes across the board, he cut CERTAIN taxes.

Irresponsible republican borrow and spend  (reaganomics) has lead us to the mess we are in right now.

If cutting taxes for everyone is the magic answer, then why didn't Bush cut our taxes when he was cutting the taxes of the wealthy?  And since the rest of us who didn't get tax cuts was about 95% of the country, maybe Bush didn't know about Reaganomics?  oh please

We were talking about Reaganomics - therefore the 20,000,000 new jobs were in the 1980's not 1990's.  Jobs were created in the 1990's after the Republicans won Congress and passed tax cuts.  Taxes can't be cut for 95% of Americans - because 40% of them don't pay taxes!

...and why all this hatred of the "wealthy"?  (I know I'd like to be wealthy some day!)  These are the folks that go to restaurants, go to stores, and buy cars, boats, clothes - you name it.  If you keep raising their taxes, they will stop spending - and where does that leave the rest of us???  Without jobs!

...as for Bush - he did cut taxes - but he also spent way too much.  When you cut taxes, you create jobs - more money comes into the gov't - the key is then NOT TO SPEND IT ALL!  It is SO simple really - just difficult to get through Congress.

They just announced corporate layoffs - 3300 at Pepsico for example.  That's 3300 less that will be paying taxes.  What if you lower the corporate tax rate (like McCain wants to do) so they keep more of the money they make, and they can hire more people???

Obama wants to raise taxes.  Corporations will keep laying people off, the "wealthy" won't spend their money (in fact they will find ways to hide it) and us little people will be out of work.  Just ask Jimmy Carter how well raising taxes works!

Of course Obama says he wants to cut taxes for us little folk - but that's not going to help us very much if we don't have a job.  Then you won't feel rich at all.

McCain wants to cut taxes for ALL - and - he's proven this time and again - he will CUT spending.  That's a recipe to get this economy moving again.

I would like to be rich also - but it's not going to happen.  I don't have that kind of job - and most people I know don't either.  But giving me a $300 a year tax cut will not really help me, and I don't know why people making three times my salary should get more than three times my tax cut, if they are not a business "creating jobs."

You might be correct on companies creating jobs, if only they would have created them here.  Instead, they outsourced good American jobs so as to increase their profits.  Why do you think they will stop thinking about increasing profits every year, and instead put the profits into creating good jobs here in America?  I am not being snarky, I really would like to know what you think.

                          thanks

Well, Obama's plans include tax credits for businesses that create AMERICAN jobs, while penalizing businesses that ship jobs out by withholding that tax credit and raising their tax rate.

That is one way to make sure those businesses put some of their profits into creating jobs "here in America".

McCain, on the other hand, wants to continue the Bush tax cuts that have allowed and almost encouraged businesses to move their jobs out of America.

I think that alone makes the choice pretty clear.

OK - a couple of things... People making 3x as much as you aren't getting 3x the tax cut.  We're talking about keeping their tax rate at 36% (Obama wants to raise it to the mid 40% level).  You don't pay anywhere near 36% in taxes!  For me - even though I am not in that tax bracket - it is simply wrong to take 40+% of anyone's money!  Now Obama might say... "well, they don't need it."  How presumptuous!  They EARNED it... they should be able to keep it!  If the gov't didn't spend SO much - then ALL of us could keep more of what we earn!

As for jobs going overseas... clearly it would be easier for companies to keep their businesses here - if only the taxes were smaller.  Right now they pay 35% in corporate taxes - in Ireland, it's 11%.  So sending jobs overseas actually helps them make money!  If the corporate tax rate were lower over here - more in line with the rest of the world - then they would make more money here in the US.  Why ship jobs overseas to pay say 15% in taxes, when they can keep them right here and pay 15% in taxes???  Businesses want to make money - of course - and making the US competitive will keep the businesses and the jobs HERE!

As for Obama including tax credits for businesses that create US jobs - that's just wrong.  (Although you are right that he will penalize corporations that ship jobs overseas.)  There have been numerous reports that show that small businesses - the ones that have 10-100 employees and that make over $250,000 will have their taxes raised under Obama's plan.  (True - the small businesses that make under $250,000 - home businesses, hot dog vendors, etc. will get a tax cut - but those don't create jobs.)  These small businesses (10-100 employees) account for 80% of job creation in the US!  80%!!!  (I read somewhere that they were responsible for nearly 100% of new jobs over the last year!)  If you raise taxes on these guys - jobs WILL BE CUT.  Costs will be passed on to us - the consumer.  It is simply BAD for the economy.  John McCain will cut taxes FOR ALL - then more jobs will be created, more jobs will stay in the US - and therefore more Americans will pay US taxes - more money will flow to the gov't.

McCain's plan:  Cut taxes - Cut spending = more jobs and better economy!

Parade magazine had a chart that detailed how much people would get under the two proposed tax plans.  Parade is not a liberal rag, so I think we can be sure that they have presented the plans fairly.  That is where I saw the tax rates - and I grant you, they are for individuals.  There was no chart for businesses.

While I can understand your frustration at small businesses having to pay so much in taxes, you are leaving out the pesky details that make the solution more difficult than the way in which you present it.  Businesses can take deductions for their expenses.  Taxes are on net, not gross.  I have read posts from small business owners who say they could only in their wildest dreams think of netting more than $250,000.

As for those that are large enough to be creating good jobs,  I would say to you, point out to me which businesses actually pay 35% in taxes.  Many businesses get tax credits from our government - see how the oil companies have still made record profits recently despite what on paper looks like high taxes.  I think you also have to differentiate between the businesses that are doing well right now and growing because they have valuable products and/or services to sell, vs. those that are doing poorly because of poor management or business practices, salary levels that are out of synch with performance of duties, etc. etc.  If a business owner thinks it's more important to purchase "company vehicles, planes, apartments, etc." for personal and family use, rather than use this money to create new jobs, then does this business deserve more tax breaks which may or may not be used as intended?

And do you think that perhaps some businesses might like having health care being removed as one of their responsibilities?  If companies would save money by having employee health care being covered by the government in some other form, I bet many would like that.  But the answer is not having everyone go out on their own to get health insurance.  Group insurance provides group discounts, and most people need help figuring out which insurance plan is best for their needs.  Insurance companies are looking for profits too, so they won't be as helpful if it would cost them money.

I am asking these questions only because I think you are assuming there is only one simple and obvious way to grow the economy, and that is Mr. McCain's way.  You keep using the exclamation marks and caps like you're yelling at us - as if to say, if you would just listen to me, you would see that I am right.  And there are no simple answers to any of our problems today - we do have to think about the way one decision will impact other sectors of the economy - just look at what's happening now - many sectors are being affected, not just banks.  And sometimes when we try to benefit one group, we hurt another, as you have correctly pointed out.

Finally, I know no one likes to pay more taxes (I don't), but I do know that there are many in my community who are not as well off as I am.  If I had to pay a little more in taxes to help out those hardworking folks that are struggling to pay bills, I would be ok with that.  Maybe you don't agree, but don't you think that many people with incomes of half a million dollars a year could go back to the rates they paid 8 years ago?  It's not like we're soaking them, they were doing ok before Bush gave them the cuts.

But the government has to stop spending more than the revenue it gets, so priorities will have to be set.  That is the difficult part, and that is where negotiation has to come in.  If solutions were always so easy, they would have been implemented by now.

Sorry this is so long, but I feel like I have to explain more, lest you think I am a bubblehead who is blindly accepting what I am fed by the Democrats.  I don't envy whoever wins this election - it's going to be really tough - no matter what he does, there will be people who will be really upset and mad.

Also, health care is a deductible expense for small businesses.  My husband's small business needs those medical expenses to reduce our tax liability.  Also too, (sorry - couldn't help it) one of the reasons our corporate taxes rates are so high is because that is the only way the gov't can squeeze a fair amount of money out of the big corps who have teams of CPA's that put the $ in tax shelters (usually off-shore).

This is quite the debate taking place. Here's what I think re: taxes. Obama's winning this argument, not because he's convinced the country he'll be giving a tax break to folks earning less than 200K, but because he's disqualified McCain on the issue of taxes. Specifically, Obama has hit McCain HARD on his health care plan, framing it as a tax hike on health care benefits. It's been devastating to McCain and that's why the poll numbers have moved so dramatically in Obama's favor on taxes. The McCain folks will say Obama's attacks on the health care plan are unfair and it may be Obama's been a bit over-the-top in his assumptions but it's been effective politics. Normally, it's what Republicans do to Democrats on taxes.

                                  Chuck -

How would you rate the following Senate races:

                                  1) Minnesota
                                  2) North Carolina
                                  3) Mississippi (Wicker v. Musgrove)
                                  4) Kentucky
                                  5) Georgia

It seems if the Democrats are going to reach the magical 60 mark, either Georgia or Kentucky would be the one to put them over the top. If you were an oddsmaker, what chances would you give the Dems at capturing 60 Senate seats? Does Palin drag Stevens over the finish line in AK? Does Obama carry Franken over the finish line in MN? Can Musgrove capture enough white votes in a deeply conservative state to get to 50%?

Also, how big do you think the Colin Powell endorsement is? I personally think it's huge.

Colin Powell's endorsement is huge because of the respect people have for him.  One interesting consequence of this election is how many senators; congressmen, and pundits have proven themselves less intelligent than I would give them credit for because of the stupid, childish remarks they have made in trying to sell  and defend their products - John McCain and Sarah Palin.  Colin Powell's message showed intelligent reasoning and that he is a man concerned with what is best for Americans, not loyalty to a cause he can't believe  in.

You've identified the closest races... I think GA ends up in a runoff..., NC is moving slightly toward the Dems; MN is a pure coin flip; KY and MS appear to be holding for the GOP but if one popped for the Dems, my guess is it would be KY.

I never thought Lieberman would have been a good running mate for McCain because just look at how poor of a campaigner he turned out to be for Gore in '00, for himself in '04 in the WH Dem primary and for himself in the CT SEN Dem primary. The guy has lost three elections in the last 8 years. Lieberman is a great first day story, but the follow through comes up short on the campaign trail.

That said, if Obama wins, I think it'll be interesting to see how he handles Lieberman; I actually think he should ask Lieberman to serve as Homeland Security Sec. Why? It's a dept. that's a mess and a dept. that Lieberman advocated for.

Hi Chuck. A few questions -

                                            1) What criteria goes into determining "likely" voters?

                                            2) Is exit polling done with early voters, and how will early voting affect exit polling Nov. 4?

                                            3) In a previous chat, you said we learn a lot about a potential president from how they run their campaigns - your thoughts on that at this time in the race?

                                            As always, thanks.

'1) What criteria goes into determining "likely" voters?'

Chuck can answer this for you, but you might want to try the Gallup Homepage. They answer this question very well.

My question for Chuck Todd -

Have you moved any electoral votes over to the Obama category lately? And if so, why?

To expand Lenore's question in regards to polls, I know that you take more than polls into considerations when you're filling in the blues and reds on the map. What exactly do you look at to come to your conclusions? Also, early last month you said that where the race stood mid October is most likely who will win the election (barring any major craziness of course). Do you still stand on that prediction?

Likely voters in our poll are determined by a few questions we ask, including on a scale of 1-10, how likely is it you will vote. On that same scale, how interested in the election are you. And you combine those results to determine likely voters. Somewhat of a special sauce for different pollsters. As for factoring in the early vote to exit polls, we've been surveying early voters all week and will do so by phone until E-Day.

                                              Hey, Chuck!

I'm going to nitpick. It seems to me your predictions on the map are days behind reality. The fast changing polls seem to leave you behind. My question is: are you being conservative (choke!) in your estimates so as not to miscall the states or is it a data stream fault. Just kinda curious.

Btw, Obama takes Missouri and my prediction of 330 EV's for Obama still holds true, if not more. L word, baby.

Oh, one more thing, I have a couple of VERY interesting articles posted here today. I encourage everyone to check them out.

I don't base the map solely on polls; that's completely irresponsible. I'm surprised at what some news orgs have done. The bottom line is that states where the race is approx. 5 points or less belong in toss-up, not lean Obama... I feel very good about our map as it stands.

                                                    Hi, Chuck.
Long time reader, first time commenter...

If Virginia and N. Carolina fall into Obama's column early on election night, will you and your fellow political analysts in the media essentially just be vamping until he hits 270 - knowing the outcome with near certainty, but not able to call it?  What's the earliest point in the evening that you'd expect the magic number to be reached?

                                                    Thanks.

Good question!   I read somewhere that the news networks have "special language" they will use to imply that Obama has basically won without actually calling it.

Really, anyone who's done the electoral math on any of these electoral map webpages will find that if Obama wins VA and Iowa with the Kerry 04' states - he wins.   Hence - WHEN the networks call VA for Obama the race is over!  (Iowa is nearly a slam dunk for him at this point)

Well, we've discussed this internally; I think it's silly to pretend it's not going to go one way but at the same time, people are still voting... and until Obama's officially at 270, we won't say he's won. We'll say, he appears to have the edge etc.

What is going to the long term effect of the racially divisive strategy that is being employed by John McCain and supported by the Republican Party? And what is going to be the implication for our future as a country.

I would like to add to this question. At what point (in other words, what will it take) will the media take a stand for America and call out the vile campaign tactics of the McCain Campaign. It is escalating daily and if it isn't reigned in, there is likely to be violence. The rest of the world is watching our democracy in action and it is pretty shameful.

                                                      Hello Chuck,

My first time doing one of these, and I will likely post a question or two of my own below - but I wanted to chime in on this one because it's an important question.

When will the "MSM" start standing up for truth and the American people?

For instance, the network could say they are taking a stand against negative campaigning, and that from now until the end of the election, they will only show clips of campaign speeches that focus on the issues facing Americans - but will NOT show the parts of the speech that promote divisiveness or bigotry.   Instead, they could put up a scoreboard, showing how many times each campaign went negative during that day's campaigning.

If all the networks would do that, I would think that both sides would have to change their tactics pretty quickly if they wanted to get any face time on the news.  Of course, I realize you don't have any control over other networks - but it has to start somewhere, right?

To put it another way, do you feel NBC has done an adequate job in calling the McCain/Palin campaign on their dishonest and divisive tactics? I'm glad to see folks like Matthews, Olbermann, and Maddow highlight these tactics and explicitly delve into the damage they do to our society. However, Brian Williams and the Nightly News team, which has much more viewership (am I right?), seem reluctant to "take sides." I can't help but wonder whether the GOP hasn't succeeded in instilliing a kind of chilling effect. What's your view?

That's so strange that you blame the Rep.'s, when Barrack started out his campaign with all the slogans from MLK.  Then decided the white democrats wouldn't care for that.

What if the black canidate does not win?  Will the black communities riot & burn there own houses & pilfer their own store in their area???  Will they take innocent truck drivers sitting in an innersection & nearly beat them to death???

We are all scared.  I believe that it's just another reason the stock market is so crazy.  It's always down during a presidential year.  But the media has cause much of these rumors & made people loose confidence.

I think race has been covered in an uneven way. We've covered it as a negative for Obama but haven't noted the positive for him as much. I think the issue is just one that everyone in the news business is overly-sensitive to, particularly in newsrooms run by baby boombers.

First Chuck you look good at the Debate nice suit and tie.

Now to business so much is going on from McCain's black relatives to Obama's 175,000 voter rallies and Sarah Palin making a complete fool of herself on SNL.  Bill and Hillary are working hard and at lease the people can trust what they say. Most remember the 1992 -2000 years when we were respected around the World, jobs, homes, vacations and even savings accounts for kids.  That was then this is now we're broke and no love around the world.

Many asked the question what brought Fannie Mae/Freddie McCain down.  McCain said it was Obama who did it.  Now to the truth it was the GOP who took controll and robbed them blind. Even Hank Paulson got his Mom a quick very low interest loan for her home in Chicago just before he announced the collapse, it's good to have a son on the inside of the crime family.

Bennie is now being used to ask for more money as the White House black mails Congress. Yes Bennie says he wants the stimulous but at what price?  Yes 800 billion wasn't enough and the White House will only ok money for the people if Congress gives them more money for the so called bailout. These tricks are getting old.  It's a clear picture of the Movie Wall Street coming to life.  Yes GREED IS GOOD AS THE GOP WOULD SAY.

Obama is doing very well. He was reportedly gone to an area in the Red State and not being welcomed.  Well I am black and I visited the South as a child seeing men handing from trees. Later as an adult I reluctant to visit with pass experiences I did go South for a visit. I had the greatest time as the people were so friendly and nice.  Yes I was a stranger but welcomed as a friend.  The South has some of the nicest people in America it's just a few who have caught up yet and hang on the pass.

Don't look for the Foreign Leaders to join Bush/Cheney in the Economic problem. Most of the Foreign Leaders just got elected because the pass Leaders were kicked out of office for following the Bush/Cheney crime team.

Chuck I learned Obama is a smart man. Most of the Democrat Senior Law Makers like Kerry, Reid, Pelosi, Leahy and others advised Obama to keep Bill Clinton out of his campaign. Now Gore and Kerry took that advice and lost. Why?  Bill Clinton is loved and respected her in the US and around the World.  He has shown by his actions as President for the American people.  He balanced the budget afther Daddy Bush keep spending us into debt.  Obama siad both Clintons would be needed and we see how well it's going.

I'll look forward to more breaking news on the crooks and lies that the GOP has told.

Notice how Powell lied to the United Nations and resently testified for criminal Ted Stevens and again lied under the oath of God to help his friend Ted.  Then he goes no Meet the Press and endorses Obama. Are you surprised not me. It's like watching a horse win the race and then going to bet your 5 dollars after seeing him win.  Powell is a loyal Republican and always will be not many people put their reputation on the line to lie to World Leaders for a corrupt Administration.  Powell will most likely be the GOP mole if he gets in Obama/Biden team.  Look for Connie Rice to put her endorsement in next she needs a job too.

                                                                  {"commentId":3593796,"threadId":"393900","contentId":"2020082","authorDomain":"jackierawlings"}

There appears to be conflicting info on what's happening in Florida.  Both camps give positive spin to their rallies there, and I have read about whether changing demographics will be enough to change it from red to blue.  I also get anecdotal evidence from my sister, who lives in Tampa, and my parents, who live farther down the Gulf Coast.

As you hail from Florida (although the eastern coast, if I recall correctly), I'm sure you have connections there that would shed light on what's going on.  What's your take on the "state" of Florida - yes, it's a tossup, but which way do you think it will fall?

Thanks for continuing to offer this forum, even if you can't visit as often as you used to.

I think FL is moving to Obama ever-so-slightly. Two things have me worried about McCain's chances of holding the state. 1) the early vote; it's undeniable how efficient Team Obama was. 2) Take a look at the 8th District race in the state. Republican Ric Keller is in a dogfight, some GOPers worry he's already lost; but no matter, it's a lean-R district; slightly swing, but leans a tad R; Keller's biggest offense is being a Republican; there's not a real scandal or anything taking him down a la Tom Feeney, his GOP colleague to the North in Florida. So if Keller goes down, that tells me, something's happening with the Dems in the state.

My biggest question these past few days is WHY isn't anything being said, written or reported on around the actual ARREST of Mark Jacoby, of YPM for voter registration fraud?

                                                                          see:

Everybody is talking about ACORN being investigated for voter registration fraud and trying to connect Obama to that organization, but no one wants to report about the organization that was hired by REPUBLICANS to register voters, that has actually had people stand up and SAY they were duped into registering as republican!  The head of this organization was actually arrested!  That's far more than the ACORN investigation....   It is so disconcerting how the news corporations seem to pick and choose what stories to share.  Or is it REALLY someone or some organization that is controlling what stories the news reports on?

I truly appreciate you offering this forum and really hope you can get to my question.

What ACORN did wrong - It hired felons (among others) to get voter registrations.  Clearly many of these registrations that were turned in were false (the Dallas Cowboys lineup, Mickey Mouse, etc.)  The fear is that when ACORN turns in these knowingly false registrations - by the thousands - it will overwhelm the system, and a lot of them will be cast.  This raises it to the level of voter fraud.

Also, there are reports of ACORN reps using intimidation to get people to effectively break the law, by registering more than once, or using false information.

Oh, and these folks that are making all these phony registrations - they are getting paid for each registrant - not by the hour - and ACORN is partially funded by the government.  That is our tax dollars hard at work!

And if you want to complain about your tax dollars at work, go holler at Halliburton bigwigs, who wasted millions of your dollars and defrauded the government to enrich themselves, AND endangered our troops!

No one is saying voter fraud, or voter registration fraud, is a good thing.

What we're saying is that until there is some actual PROOF that ACORN deliberately and purposely tried to pass off phony registrations (the organization - NOT individual employees trying to get paid for work they never did) - we are reserving judgment, and you should too.

Jumping to conclusions usually ends up making people look foolish. Just like all those who thought the story about the woman who was "attacked" by an Obama supporter who carved a "B" on her face was real - you don't want to end up having to eat crow over this, do you?

And the same day registration and voting thing has nothing to do with ACORN activities.  So why don't you focus on the wide variety of ways that both parties are trying to influence who registers, and who votes?  Can you be objective in this way?

It's all just too confusing and lends itself to crazy conspiracy theories; ACORN ought to figure out how to detach itself from some of these things that they do.

There's a lot in that great book about accountability, see.   And Sarah Palin isn't accountable yet.

Especially because the AIP is an anti-American organization.

The year Todd and Sarah Palin first attended the AIP convention and the year that Todd Palin was so moved from that convention to join...was the year that both Joe Vogel was killed trying to purchase domestic terror bomb making materials in fighting for the same issues he founded the party on...

                                                                                      that same year!

...(that's not hype or spin ...that is the truth which baffles me )and common sense tells you some in that party had to have been  mourning at least talking about the party founders' death....and also that same year they drew up their Alaska constitution if they were to secede. We have not seen a single story on this.Todd Palin from that initial convention that he and sarah attended...was so moved ...that he joined after attending.  and was an active member for 10 years.Sarah attended again once ...just as a non member supporter.and then as the keynote speaker.this is a problem.but I would love to hear your thoughts. There is something wrong with the press' overwhelming omission of this story.

For those folks that followed Alaska politics in the '80s and '90s, the AIP was an alternative to the GOP because voters that the party was too entrenched and not answering to the middle. Careful of over-reading party platforms on third parties but not holding candidates from the GOP or the Dem Party accountable for their platforms. The fact is the AIP elected a governor, at a time when the Dems and GOP weren't popular in the state.

Question regarding the early voting an absentee voting and exit polling:

how will the exit polls and the district counts reflect the opinions of the early voters and absentee voters? Candidates make their decisions to concede in modern times based on what the district counts and exit polls tell them. In this election there will be huge numbers of absentee and early voting ballots that are not counted in the initial poll results on election night. Do you think the candidates will hold off on any concession unless it is a complete blow out one way or the other?

                                                                                        thanks

Why does it seem that the national networks want to call the race when it's not over. Truman defeated Dewey. There is history on the side of McCain actually.

Dude, Chuck has been nothing but fair. if anything the difference you see if that he has opportunity to be a multi-dimensional person. on C-Span he reported some inside information from his office at Hot Line and that was it, no emotion or joking around, now that he is on a cable news network, he gets to show off his personality a bit.

I think you need to pay attetion and get over your right wing bias of how you view the world. "Reality has a decidedly left wing bias", as Colbert so eloquently put it.

I think polls do a disservice to both sides - a huge margin for Obama can lull voters to stay home since they think he's going to win anyway.  A huge deficit for McCain can lead to lack of enthusiasm and people just staying home since they think he is going to lose anyway.  I wish they would just do away with polls.  Look at the primaries - they were rarely correct!

The only poll that counts is on election day!

And when things are going bad, the reverse. If you guys only saw me once a week or so or watched our coverage every couple of days, I think there wouldn't be nearly the amount of bias claims. It's the sheer heft of the coverage when things are not going well for one candidate or the other that creates this myth.

This is a question I have had for a long time, but have never heard anyone ask the candidates their position on it, and have never seen a news organization tackle the issue:

There is little question in my mind that our current President has exceeded his authority, usurped authority he did not have (and Cheney too), violated our laws and his oath of office, and possibly broke international laws as well (especially regarding human rights issues).

There are so many examples of this I could give, but to name a few:

Falsifying and/or exaggerating the "evidence" that was used to generate support for the invasion of Iraq, authorizing the torture of prisoners at Gitmo, "extraordinary rendition", authorizing wiretaps and spying on American citizens' private communications, "signing statements", the "outing" of Valerie Plame, refusing to cooperate with Congressional investigations, etc.

                                                                                                              So my question is this:

If Obama wins, what are his options for investigating and pushing for prosecution (as appropriate) for any crimes committed by the Bush Administration?   Is it even likely that he will do such a thing?   Would doing so be good or bad for America?

Also, what can Obama do to reverse or revoke any of these things?   Obviously we cannot take back the invasion of Iraq, or undo the harm done by torturing prisoners.   But what about reversing the Executive Orders that approved so many other questionable actions committed by Bush, Cheney, and their hirelings?

PS - I'm not including McCain in my question because I doubt he would even consider changing anything or opening up an investigation.  It would not serve his interests to do so, when he has supported so many of Bush's policies and actions all along.

                                                                                                              {"commentId":3597811,"threadId":"393900","contentId":"2020082","authorDomain":"moeloe"}

Furthermore, even if it wouldn't be "well received politically", isn't justice and truth, and holding people accountable for their actions more important than popularity?  If not, then why bother having a Constitution or government at all?

Most go unnoticed... a few grab some attention, usually because political opponents make sure we get the memo.

What do you think of this scenario:

January 18th, 2009: President George W. Bush signs a collection of full and unconditional pardons to current and former members of his administration for any crimes that they may have committed against the United States.  That same day, in his final act as president, Bush resigns from office, effective at noon the next day.  Dick Cheney is thus elevated to the presidency for a 24 hour period, during which time he signs an identical pardon for now ex-President George W Bush.

                                                                                                                Plausible?

                                                                                                                Probable?

"Under the Constitution, only federal criminal convictions, such as those obtained in the United States District Courts, may be pardoned by the President. In addition, the President's pardon power extends to convictions obtained in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia and military court-martial proceedings. However, the President cannot pardon a state criminal offense."

Also the President (I think) has the power to pardon himself of crimes other than impeachment.  This was an option Secretary of State Haig gave to Ford concerning the pardon of Nixon.  Article II section 2 of the Constitution is pretty broad and offers no real guidance.

But, if granted a pardon... there would be no subsequent conviction.  That is the purpose of the unconditional pardon granted to Nixon, to prevent prosecution (which was likely) and conviction (also likely).

I recall reading a link here on the Vine recently that claimed Bush and others in his administration could be prosecuted as war criminals due to the Supreme Court's rulings regarding the treatment of detainees at Gitmo and other such prisons.  If that's true, then there is a very good reason for Bush to want to make sure he has them all covered with pardons before he leaves office.

I know that there is always heated rhetoric in campaigns, but I have been alarmed by the level that the McCain/Palin campaign has reached. With words and phrases like "terrorist," "socialist," "anti-American," "...not a man who sees America like you and I...," they imply that Obama would be a dangerous and treasonous leader. Mix this in with racial hysteria and the economic meltdown, and I fear for Obama's safety.

Usually this kind of rhetoric is promulgated by independent organzations (eg Swift Boats, Willie Horton), rather than directly by the presidential campaigns. This has not been the case for McCain/Palin. Do you think it's ethical for them to go in this direction? Is all fair in love and politics? Are they trying to poison the presidency of Obama?

I've been reading about the early voter demographics in Georgia, and polls in  West Virginia and North Dakota etc. Seems to me that some of the traditional red states might be more toss up than we think.

I guess I am just asking Lenore's question above in another way.  What are the other elements of your map, if not polls?

There are many military veterans groups who are against John McCain and refute his claim that he has always supported them.  His voting record supports the veterans claims and it would be fair and just to give them a chance to publicly voice their displeasure.  Will you or your network please do this?

Just call me Joe the American disabled veteran with a few tough question I have a right to ask Senator McCain. Senator McCain please answer these questions the American people have a right to know the truth before the election!
I served in Vietnam and I was warned upon my arrival that if I was ever captured that I was to only give my name, rank, and serial number. I served in a unit that was made up of 90 % black men, and I was one of only two white Sergeants in this unit. I clearly had my life saved by my fellow black soldiers at great risk to their own personal safety. This was during a time when there were parts of America, that they were still being told they could not enter because it was for whites only.
I was wounded along with a number of my brother soldiers in an attack. While waiting for the helicopter to arrive to take us to the rear area hospital, I noticed that I was bleeding along side of a fellow black soldier.
As strange as this might sound to Gov. Palin I could not distinguish my blood from the other soldiers as they ran together onto the ground in Vietnam. They were exactly the same shade of red blood. Just two American soldiers bleeding together, one black one white imagine that.
Now in light of the very ugly racist campaign McCain has run and his demand for Senator Obama to answer and answer over and over his having worked on a school board committee with an old radical from the 1960 when Obama was eight years old. I want to ask a few questions of my own.
McCain what information exactly did you give the enemy when you were broke as you put it? Sir the American people have the right to know! Did you in fact push for normalizing relations with Vietnam as a means of keeping them from telling the American people what you had actually said? I think the American people have the right too know sir!
McCain is it true that you gave into blackmail and fought for the establishment of normal relations with the country of Vietnam as a means of keeping them from playing their tape recordings of you spilling your guts? I want you to answer this question sir the American people have the right to know!
Sir what exactly is the long term relationship you have carried on with the convicted burglar and one time suspected terrorist G. Gordon Liddy? Please answer me sir the American people have the right to know!
Sir when you were attempting to interfere with regulators so your good buddy Keating could fleece the American people out of over $250,000,000.00 how much did he bribe you with sir? We know about the $112,000.00 but how much did he give you under the table? Sir the American people have the right to know!
Senator McCain do you believe you can trash one the brightest men to run for President in the last fifty years or more, and not get asked some tough but fair questions yourself?
I expect an immediate response as you owe the American people an accounting of your actions on these very serious matters sir!
Your party talks about family values, how many times did you commit adultery with your current wife, while married to your previous wife sir! The American people have the right to know?
Senator last week when you were making a speech and you stubled and said "My fellow prisoners of war!" when it was clear you were trying to say "My Fellow Americans". Sir was that related to your dementia? Sir the American people have a right to examine your medical records. You want us to elect you and place Sarah the lest qualified VP candidate in history a heart beat away from the oval office and your attacking erratic! The American people have the right to know!
Sir you can call me "Joe the American disabled veteran". Lastly sir why have you been AWOL when it comes to votes on "Veterans Benefits"leaving you sir with one of the worst records in the Senate? Sir the American veterans and the men and women fighting for this country have a right to know why you have consistently been missing in action when it comes to supporting veterans!
