The tragic shooting in Tucson, Ariz., has already prompted several major gun proposals on Capitol Hill, including one to prohibit high-volume firearms and one to keep guns a minimum distance away from high-level government officials. But none of them address a wider problem with no easy government solution: how an obviously mentally unstable individual like Jared Lee Loughner, the alleged shooter, was able to buy a gun.

- The current spate of 100 days media coverage has the feel of the old adage, "Everything's been said, just not everyone has said it."And yet, it's amazing how little attention we've given to what the Obama presidency looks like from 30,000 feet.

Hi Chuck,
My question is in the area of domestic self-reliance...Do you the see the US, today, as a totally self-reliant entity. The reasoning behind my question is simple, little by little, I've seen industries producing goods being off-shored and IMO, the US minimized to a global consumer. With the only remnant of a superpower being our purchasing power. What are your thoughts on this..

Hi Chuck,
Being from Quebec, I just to say that all americans will benefit fron universal health care. It's important that the federal governant should be the first guardian of such important liberties as helath care for everyone. I think that a nation can be called a true nation by measuring how well she takes care of its citizens.
What good is it to spend so much federal money on wars and space programs, if you cannot guarantee minimum health care for everyone and espacially those who are the weakest.
Thanks !
Pierre Richard
Chuck Todd,
I am always listening very closely when you speak. I value your knowledge and interpretation of the political landscape. I am a Norwegian citizen who is a legal alien. During Hardball tonight you said that only US citizen would get health care coverage. I assume that was a slip of the thong? Or am I missing something?
Thank you for keeping me straight Chuck Todd.
Sincerely,
AnneBerit Condit— ABCondit
Paul,
I read your article dated June 22nd and I agree with your comments about how we need to act together now to pass a health care package.
My question to these Democratic Senators that oppose this public option. How can they be against a public option when they had the opportunity to attend one of our public universities that were founded over 100 years ago to feed the needy for higher education. We have the 47 million US citizens that need our help for health care. Where is their moral compassion to help our own people in need?
God bless the following Senators:
Blauch Lincoln - (D-AR) - University of Arkansas
Tom Carper - (D-DE) - Ohio State
Maria Cantwell - (D-Wa) - Miami University - Oxford, Ohio ( received Pell Grants)
Ron Wyden - (D - OR) - University of Oregon
Bill Nelson - (D-FL) - University of Florida
Mary Landriew (D-LA) - Louisiana State University
Kay Hagen (D-NC) - Florida State University
Kent Conrad (D-ND) - Stanford (private)
Max Baucus (D-MT) - Stanford (private)In closing not sure which of these Senators received public assistance besides Maria Cantwell.
"Right as we walked off stage, he [Todd] said to me "That was a cheap shot." I [Scahill] said "What are you talking about?" and he said "You know it." I then said that I monitor msm coverage very closely and asked him what was not true that I said on the show. He then replied: "that's not the point. You sullied my reputation on TV."
Poor Chuck. Big baby. His feelings are hurt. BaaaWaaaa. Trouble is the MSM is lazy and they believe they ARE the story not reporting on the story.

Hi Chuck,
I was just wondering if you could do some follow up for some of us very frustrated Americans.
During President Obama's campaign, he promised to take action on the outsourcing of jobs by taking away tax breaks for those companies who continue to outsource and give those breaks to companies that keep the work here in the U.S., yet we haven't heard much about that since he took office.
I work for IBM. A pretty big company I think. And they are outsourcing like crazy. And not only outsourcing, but cutting wages and benefits as well. Since mid Dec, 2008, I have had all pad vac and holidays taken away, three 10% pay cuts, and hours reduced from 40 per week to 32. And all the while, my insurance benefit premiums went up an additional $137 per week. I now pay $1040 per month, thru my employer, just for my husband and I.
Yet, IBM is showing an 18% increase in earnings this first qtr 2009 over same period 2008, which was a record breaking year, over 2007, which was a record breaking year over 2006, which was a record breaking year over 2005. And poor CEO Sam, is still getting his $21mil a year, with increases. And I'm sure all the other IBM Execs are getting theirs as well.
Why don't I just quit and go find another job you say ? There are none. IBM has outsourced my career away. And, of course, I am over qualified for other jobs. Believe me, I've tried and am still trying. Why don't I go back to college and learn another trade you ask. I can't afford to,. I already paid the cost of a college education, and spent the last 28 years using it. And even if I could afford to, at age 55 right now, by the time I finish my new education (since I still need to work while attending college), no one will hire me. And, by the way, I still carry a pager, am oncall 24x7x365. And I do get paged ALL THE TIME, days, nights, weekends and holidays. My husband and I haven't been able to plan a dinner out or anything for a very long time now. I need a little vacation, but can't because I can't afford to take the time off, without pay.
I would just like for someone, anyone, but especially President Obama, to find out why IBM is destroying careers, and lives, like mine when they are continuing to show such HUGE profits. But then I guess, cutting all us up in into little bitty pieces may just be exactly how they are making their gazillions.
Thanks for listenting to me and I hope you find it prudent to submit my inquiry to President Obama.— GeanieT
Hey Chuck!
I just want to start by saying I think you do an excellent job of reporting, I don't agree with all your assessments although I do trust you to be accurate and professional.
But I gotta tell ya Bro! I don't know how you keep your cool here on newsvine at times!
I'll tell you what! I get my fair share of criticism on some of my threads but nothing compared to some of the criticism you get! Mostly unwarranted criticism I might add.
Well keep up the good work!
Ray
I just had the opportunity to read the transcript of your podcast with Glenn Greenwald and I have to say your perspective speaks volumes about where your loyalties are.
I think your high end income and your need to find copy certainly has seemed to enslave you to your sources.
The truth (or black and white as you refer to it) almost souunds like a perjorative when you talk about it.
The press is in a world of hurt these days because of the sorry place this kind of relativist groupthink has taken it.
Thank God there are still Glenn Greenwalds out there.
Enjoy your burgeoning self worth. I'll find it prudent to question your judgement and your veracity.
Chuck you were outstanding filling in for Chris, you have your style and wit that really came ou t last week you can be the link from Tim for a lot of us who get what Ms NBC has to offer one thing that i think you should do that will only enhance your image is to get rid the face hair it is not becoming your image. Its like looking at the New Yankees or the wild looking Boston Red Sox to me there is something dirty about it. no matter we love your work keep it up and great luck moving forward thanks Joe
I feel you need to check in to the campaign money given to President Obama from GE. GE, who is the only contender in the EMR race for having all medical records on the Internet. President Obama is really pushing this.
Also he had a lady stand up on his face book town hall meeting telling about her problems and health care issue. However, he has known her for at least 12 months, and she works for his health issues, unpaid of course, but can't work. This does not figure. Why has he not helped her get a real paying job and/or helped her with her health care issues? Looks better this way.
NBC will be real embarrassed with all of this hype comes crashing down. I voted for him, but I'm not stupid. I can see the way the wind is blowing. Middle class citizens are going down to poverty level.
I have worked for 41 years and will not have anything to show for it after all this recession and inflation is over.
Hi Chuck--I appreciate what you do but if you are going to comment on the arts, grow some perspective for crying out loud. Karl Malden's career is one of the most distinguished in American theater and film. Please re-watch (for example) "On the Waterfront" before you denigrate him to a footnote. Fair enough?

Glad to see you finally asked a poignant question of the president at the last news conference. Maybe you will turn into a reporter yet. There is hope. We need someone asking the difficult questions, rather than a "reporter" that just parrots the administration line.
Thanks again.
Chuck, why are you so obtuse when you question the President during press conferences? Your questions are not well formed, and to compensate you become borderline disrespectful. It would be really amazing if you would step down and be replaced with someone with the dignity and professionalism of Tim Russert.
I just saw your comment on Hardball regarding the public option of health care reform. You reiterated the fear that an employer might decide to change an employees health plan from one that the employees liked to a public plan. What you fail to realize is that this already happens all the time. Employers are constantly switching their employees health plans without the input of the employees. And I can tell you as a primary care physician that it is almost always a switch that is to the detriment of the employee/patient. The employees are usually switched from a fee-for-service type plan to an HMO with a diminished pool of physicians that may cause them to lose the option of continuing to be able to see the doctors they already have. In addition we are seeing patients switched to plans with higher co-pays and deductibles. And almost all of the current health plans tie our hands by making it impossible to prescribe the medications that we feel are best for the patients. They force us to prescribe only medications that increase the profit margins of the insurance companies and put our patients and us at risk. If you want to find out what's really going on in heath care you need to talk to guys like me who are in the trenches.
Mr. Todd, Just saw you on Rachel Maddow re: new fed ee policy to extend benefits to same sex partners...while you allege rush to policy to appease the gay community, you need to go and check that State announced this policy at least two weeks ago....what I want to know is what happens to different sex couples who live together but who are not married...could this be yet another example of unequal treatment that should be banned under the 14th amendment as the recent Olson/Boies CA.N.D. filing might also argue?

Chuck, when you are reporting on TV you begin almost every sentence with the word "Look". Did you pick that up from Bill Clinton, Joe Biden? Believe me, it can get quite annoying. Just wanted to make you aware.

I enjoy Chuck immensely; however, the other day I heard him mention President Obama as "having Muslim blood," referring to his father.
Being Muslim or of the Nation of Islam is a religion, Chuck. Religious viewpoints and choices do not enter our genes. I do not think comments such as "Muslim blood" help us understand the realities of the conflicts of the modern world. They especially do not help us understand the Middle East, where we already are faced with the claim by some that being Judaism is a race, not a religion.
Be careful, Chuck. Words count.
Mr. Todd:
Two words of advice:
Nutrisystem
Another chin is creeping in. Do not use Gingrich as a body model.
Rogaine
It comes in a foam now.
You are too hot to slide into middle pre-pundit sluggery.
